Associate Lead Research Engineer / CTO

Who are we?

Retras is a deeptech artificial intelligence startup developing an application dedicated to autonomous motor rehabilitation for patients recovering from stroke, Parkinson’s disease, trauma, or with “dys” disorders, etc. The tool analyzes movement in real time to accelerate patient progress through tailored gamification. The app runs on the patient’s smartphone or tablet and addresses various disorders, initially focusing on the hand and upper limb.

Retras is incubated at Agoranov (Paris) and has been supported by INRIA Startup Studio. We have a prototype currently being tested and a committed team working on a high-impact project.

Our mission

• Motivate patients to perform their rehabilitation exercises at home through real-time corrective feedback via movement and gesture analysis.

• Provide therapists with an assessment tool to ensure optimal patient monitoring.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a co-founding Lead Research Engineer or CTO with an entrepreneurial mindset and a hands-on profile, ready to co-build the startup alongside the Retras team and the Founder/CEO.

Your mission

• Contribute to defining the product roadmap with the founder.

• Understand rehabilitation challenges and translate them into technological specifications.

• Lead product development while complying with regulatory requirements.

• Guide the best technology choices to achieve strategic and financial goals.

• Establish a culture of software development best practices and innovation, ensuring robust and efficient technology.

• Identify and leverage market opportunities.

• Build and maintain strong relationships with investors, partners, and clients to ensure product alignment with their needs and expectations.

• Depending on your interests, recruit, mentor, and lead the technical team while fostering a collaborative, performance-driven culture.

Required skills

• Entrepreneurial mindset: proactive, ready to tackle challenges, and comfortable with uncertainty

• Technical leadership & vision: Strong experience as a CTO/Lead Engineer in mobile development, from concept to launch.

• Hands-on attitude: “Let’s do it” mindset, ready to get directly involved and turn ideas into reality.

• Technical expertise: Solid coding experience with relevant technologies (React, AI/ML, Python, DevOps) and comfortable with code reviews, engineering best practices, deployment, and maintenance.

• User focus: UX sensitivity to design technology that solves real, practical problems.

• Product development & strategy: End-to-end mobile product development experience (architecture, design, deployment) and ability to translate needs into product specifications and roadmaps.

• Curiosity & passion for innovation: Strong interest in prototyping or supervising prototypes to explore new ideas and cutting-edge research.

• Budget & fundraising: Experience managing technical budgets, contributing to fundraising, and presenting technical topics to investors.

Tech stack

• Client: React Native, HTML/CSS/JS

• Backend: Python

• AI: Computer vision (image segmentation, tracking), time series, data science

• Cloud infrastructure: HDS servers, Scaleway/AWS services

• Platforms: iOS and Android applications

• Experience in Medical Devices is a plus.

Fluent English with strong communication skills; French proficiency appreciated.

Compensation

We are starting with equity compensation to align our interests from the beginning. Once the first clients are acquired or money raised, a fixed salary will be implemented, with bonuses tied to your impact.
